There's always a "right time" to start a business. That time is now. Many people have several unanswered questions behind starting their own business, but the reasons "why" generally remain the same across the board. This post will briefly give you an important rundown of why it's so necessary to have your own business during this time (not just any business, but a business that fits into your already hectic schedule.)
I've been working for myself for the last 7 years, and I LOVE it! Sure, it has it's pro's and con's as with everything, but the pro's in my opinion and based on my experience DEFINITELY outweigh the con's. In another post, I will go into more depth of what you should look for when deciding to start your own business, particularly your own online business.
Listed below are 7 very critical reasons why you should seriously consider starting your own home-based business if you haven't done so already:
1. No cap on income earning potential: Isn't that wonderful to know that unlike the corporate structure, when you own your own business, there is no limit on what you can potentially earn? On top of this, you can delegate tasks, hire assistants, interns, etc. to help with the workload (leverage time), to generate even more income. Your earning capacity is endless especially when you're no longer trading time for money. There are ways to structure your business so that you can do this without even leaving your home and while lounging in your PJ's!
2. Can create a lifestyle: Most business owners, when beginning, work in an industry where they have to wear all of the hats at first and do everything to get the business going. Franchise owners, massage therapists, even lil ole me, the violin teacher, only have so many man-hours that can be put into the business. This can consequentially lead to the business owner being "married" to their business, and not able to take a day off. This is good for several reasons, albeit taxing on your lifestyle. When selecting which type of business to start, decide what type of lifestyle you want to have. It's best to find a business that can help you acquire that.
3. Enormous tax benefits: As a business owner, the IRS allows more tax deductions for the expenses to operate your business. If you work from home, you can write off a portion of your house liabilities in direct proportion to the square footage of the space that you use in the house. Certain equipment, office supplies, postage, mileage on your car to meetings or appointments, telephone calls, continuing education materials, coaching, advertising... basically anything that you have to spend money on to run your business, is a tax deductible expense. This will lessen what your taxable income is, thus saving you a great deal on taxes (of course, I'm no tax professional, so you'll have to contact one specifically for what your needs are.)
4. Flexible work hours and work locations: When you run and operate your own business, you can set your work hours. You can set the time, days and location of where you work. I like to travel to different locations throughout the week, so my violin studio is somewhat mobile. I don't like teaching from one location, so I get to move around a bit. If I don't want to teach on the weekends, I don't have to. Instead, I choose to gig on the weekends, which gives me more freedom and flexibility. One advantage to owning your own online business is that you can work from your computer absolutely ANYTIME of the day. With the connectivity of wireless networks, and mobile communication devices, another advantage of owning your own online business is that you can literally work from ANYWHERE!
5. Internet businesses are recession proof: I know it is hard to believe, but there is always someone "out there" looking to spend money, and depending on your industry, looking to spend money with you! The home-based business industry is one that doesn't slump. People are constantly looking for ways to make more money. Also, the internet makes international business a "point and click" away. The internet has made the world virtually accessible to anyone. Contrary to having a business that only services local customers, having an internet-based business means your business' presence online would be global. That's enormous!
6. You can transfer your business to your children: With any business that you own, you can transfer the ownership and assets to your offspring. What better way to leave a legacy and the results of all of your efforts than to keep them in the family and pass them down through generations. You can teach your children the importance of entrepreneurship and give them a head-start among their peers for critical thinking skills, understanding money and time management, as well as giving them a nice platform to build from.
7. No boss! This has to be one of my favorite reasons! If you've experienced what it's like already to not have a boss, isn't it one of the most liberating and freeing feelings on the planet? When I wake up in the morning not having to report to anyone except my conscious, it's ALWAYS a delightful experience. I never complain about having to get up to go to work. I never complain about having to punch a clock. I never complain about having to meet a deadline or working my tail off for someone else. I can work my tail off, when I choose, when I want to, just for me! Wouldn't you like to be able to say and do that? It's quite challenging to capture & convey the excitement I feel about this benefit of business ownership to you. It's absolutely wonderful!
Hopefully, after reading this article, you will be inspired to venture into owning your own business going into this next chapter of your life. Since you are reading this, you have come to the right place and have made a wonderful connection.
